The otherness’ representation in art
A metacultural approach
Abstract
In the widespread text “The Artist as an Ethnographer,” Hal Foster quotes in this contemporary art’s praxis, problematic issues that are difficult to be solved. How to artistically quote the “other,” without infringing ethical notions? By fostering the visibility of “minorities,” articulations around otherness are conducive to the constitution of a democratic context. Meanwhile, such approaches on alterity often serve to strengthen hegemonic power. To reflect on this dilemma, the present article considers aspects of Indianism and Indigenism, under postcolonial perspectives. Besides that, is developed an appreciation on Brazilian contemporary art by the perspective of the metacultural approach, in mode to essay a conclusion.
